Canadian Experience Class was launched in September 2008. This program is for people who already have skilled work experience in Canada and want to immigrate permanently.

Unlike the Federal Skilled Worker Class, this program is not based on a point system. You have to demonstrate the availability of the qualifying work experience, and proficiency in either English or French.

As of January 2015, there is a new system called Express Entry enabling candidates to apply to this program. To be able to build an electronic profile in this system, a candidate must meet the following criteria:

  1. Valid temporary resident status during the period of work in Canada.
  2. At least one year (12 months) of full-time (or equivalent*) skilled work experience in Canada gained within the three years preceding the date of application.**
  3. Your work experience must be Skill Type 0 (managerial), or Skill Level A (professional) or B (skilled trade or technical occupation) of the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  4. Proficiency in either English or French (speaking, reading, listening and writing). Your level of proficiency will depend on your occupational skill level.***

*   Part-time work experience can be counted, but it usually takes longer to accumulate the amount of hours equivalent to full-time work (minimum 30 hours per week).

**   You do not have to be employed at the time of the application.

*** For example, if you have work experience in Skill Type 0 (managerial level) of the NOC, you must demonstrate high proficiency in the language. Your proficiency levels are established through submitting language test results from a designated testing agency. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) are currently the tests that assess your proficiency in the languages.
